Cameraperson Assignment #1: Exposure/Lenses
-
Shoot about 15 seconds of tape on each shot.
-
Each time your light changes, white balance (and black balance if you have
this feature).
-
Before each shot, zoom all the way in to check focus.
1. In the sunshine on a tripod:
-
Shoot a person with strong backlight (with the sun behind him/her).
-
Open the aperture to try to correct for better exposure on his/her face.
Shoot this.
-
Use something white or shiny to reflect fill light onto his/her face. Shoot
this.
-
Move the camera or the person to get a better exposure without using fill
light. Shoot this.
Notice how the quality of your image changes.
2. In the sunshine, position a person so you can see other
buildings and objects for some distance behind him/her. Then shoot each
of the following, first on a tripod, then handheld, without changing your
camera position:
-
A tripod shot of a person with a wide angle lens.
-
A handheld shot of the same person with a wide angle lens.
-
A tripod shot of the same person, with a normal lens.
-
A handheld shot of the same person, with a normal lens.
-
A tripod shot of the same person, with a telephoto lens.
-
A handheld shot of the same person, with a telephoto lens.
Notice how your depth of field changes. When handholding, notice how the
stability of your image changes.
3. In open shade, repeat Exercise 2 on a tripod only. Notice
how your depth of field is less to begin with and changes with the choice
of lens.
